5 Best Smart Watches in 2020

With so many Smart Watches releasing nowadays, it’s tough to keep track about which one to purchase considering the amount of investment involved. It is indeed a head-scratcher. But why fret when we are here? Here’s the list of 5 best smart watches currently available in the market.

Fitbit Versa 2

With the success of its first-generation watch, Fitbit did a fantastic job of improving upon the first gen watch-more features and a near-perfect fitness tracker in the second gen. Overall it can be said that Fitbit Versa 2 is the best fitness tracker/smart watch they have to offer currently.

Pros

The improvements in the second gen are bang on. Fitbit Versa 2 now comes with great battery life (5 days on a single charge) and it also provides us with the Always-On mode (A feature which has arrived on the latest 5th Gen Apple Watch). With a faster processor, the performance of the Fitbit Versa 2 has definitely become smoother by some margin. Fitbit has also added Amazon Alexa to the Fitbit Versa 2 which is great, provided Alexa responds to the query accordingly.

The previous gen had a very confusing sleep score stats but thankfully Fitbit has made the stats simpler this time around. Furthur OTA updates have enabled the blood oxygen level saturation level monitor, a feature not available yet on the Apple Watch. The variation in breathing is monitored and the reports can be used by doctors to diagnose the underlying conditions better.

Cons

The major deal-breaker for people would be the absence of GPS in Fitbit Versa 2. This means will have to carry their smartphones along with their watch to enable step tracking which, in all honesty, is quite inconvenient and inaccurate. Fitbit Versa 2 comes with a Spotify app but that app only lets you control the music being played on your phone and there is not remote playback from the device itself.

There is also no integration with either the Apple Health app or the Google Fit app which will again be a bummer for many. Fitbit offers a premium version of their app which will give you a complete breakdown of the scores and give you a proper insight as to how you can improve your daily schedule but as mentioned, it’s a premium product and comes with a subscription fee.

The addition of Amazon Alexa sounds tempting but at this stage you can call it a gimmick due to the complications whilst using it. All the responses of Alexa are in text form and you require your phone nearby to utilize the voice commands for the Alexa app.

Fossil Gen 5

One of the oldest players in the game, Fossil, with their Gen 5 smart watch keep living up to their reputation. The Fossil Gen 5 is the best offering in their line up of smart watches. The watch uses WearOS and hence instantly becomes an attractive option for the Android users.

Pros

Fossil Gen 5 has improved on one of the drawbacks of the Fossil Gen 4 i.e. the battery life. It can now last up-to 2 days, depending on the usage. Doesn’t sound too convincing, but it’s definitely better than the previous generation. The best part of the Fossil Gen 5 is its stylish yet subtle design which is a perfect fit for all sort of attires. The watch comes with a wide variety of straps which can be purchased separately. The Fossil Gen 5 comes with Snapdragon 3100 chipset and 1 GB of RAM making the watch very responsive and there is no sign of slowdown or lag at any point.

The smart watch is compatible with both iOS and Android, but as it uses WearOS, it works better with Android phones. The Fossil Gen 5 comes with three buttons on the side. The main middle button is for controlling the watch faces. The other buttons can be assigned any shortcut to an app on the watch. I recommend keeping one as Google Pay for NFC Payment.

With 8GB of internal storage, you have ample space to store your apps and music on the device itself. As it comes with in-built GPS, steps tracking is very efficient and with the 3ATM water resistance rating you can even go for swimming activities without any worry. Fitness tracking can be done on the Google Fit app which is available on both Android and iOS platforms.

Cons

The design is the most appealing part of the Fossil Gen 5 but this too is specific. The dial is at 44mm and it is 12mm thick giving it a bulky look, especially on the hands of skinny people. Apart from the splendid performance of the WearOS, the truth is, it drains the battery very fast. Fossil Gen 5 with its exceptional battery modes can make the juice last over a day but that’s it. The battery makes you want for more. The Fossil Gen 5 has in-built speakers which is hard to recommend for frequent use because of it’s subpar quality.

Apple Watch 3

With Apple Watch 3 price gone down and the two models it provides, Apple Watch 3 is a good buy, even now. There is a 4G variant and another non-4G variant. It’s not the best offering from Apple but it sure is the cheapest one out there.

Pros

Released in 2017, people might get the idea that Apple Watch 3 has become obsolete but that, in any way, is not true. The Apple Watch 3 stands its ground even in 2020. With the iconic design of the Apple Watch which has become quite trendy, the Apple Watch 3 has improved quite a bit from its past generations and the features it provides are one of the best while comparing to the other brands. With the WatchOS6 update, the ECG app was also made available for the Apple Watch 3, a feature unique to Apple Watches. The app monitors your heart rate and provides you with an ECG graph which, surprisingly, is quite reliable.

The UI is pretty simple and convenient to use. The call quality overall is very impressive on the watch. With 5ATM water resistance rating, one can even monitor their swimming activities without any hiccups whatsoever. If you buy the 4G enabled Apple Watch 3, you will have direct access to Apple Music store which improves the music experience significantly. You can also ask Siri to play any song you want and you can also ask Siri to play your pre-saved playlists. With two variants of the Apple Watch 3, we have two different outcomes of the battery test. The one without SIM lasts for two days without charge whilst the one with SIM gives you one day of use.

Cons

To all the Android users I have hyped up, I am sorry, this watch is only compatible with an iPhone. Siri is a good addition but sometimes it just fails to work and that might get annoying at times. The price is also another drawback of the series. The 4G version of the watch is still expensive compared to the normal version of the Apple Watch 3.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Samsung Galaxy Watch competes with the likes of Apple Watch 5 and stands its ground. With two sizes to choose from, we suggest the 46mm one, which gives it a more premium feel. The rotating bezel makes the watch look more appealing.

Pros

The most satisfying part of the Samsung Galaxy Watch is the circular bezel which helps in navigating the smartwatch. The battery life is very impressive. It can go on for four days on a single charge. The UI is smooth and quite convenient to use. The watch comes with 39 total exercises and 6 of them are auto-tracked. Samsung Galaxy Watch does a very good job in tracking your fitness activities. The sleep tracking function works as good as advertised. You get a detailed analysis of your sleep cycle and it auto-tracks your sleep.

Cons

Samsung Galaxy Watch nails almost all aspects of the fitness features but it seriously lacks some of the key features. Samsung has provided Bixby as the voice assistant which cannot be compared to the performance of the Google Assistant or Siri. The Samsung Galaxy Watch isn’t fully compatible with iPhones. Even with Android devices, there are not many apps for the watch as of now and, it seems, this trend is not going to change anytime soon. It misses out on essential apps like Google Maps, Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger. The compatibility of the Samsung Galaxy Watch is best with Samsung devices only.

Apple Watch 5

Each year Apple keeps improving on the Apple watch and this year is no different. Apple Watch 5 is the latest offering by Apple and is the best what Apple offers currently. It comes with the best display ever on a smart watch.

Pros

The latest Apple Watch 5 brings with it the much awaited feature by the iOS fans, Always-On Display. Each watch-face has their own dimmer version for the always-on mode and that is indeed a great addition which will enable for quick glancing at the screen without the need to twist your hand for it.

There is also an addition of Compass app which works quite nicely. Another feature added is international SOS without the need of a SIM carrier. This feature is quite convenient considering how Apple with it’s ECG app can track patients with chances of attacks and notify them. It can also detect when a person has fallen and if the user doesn’t respond, the watch automatically calls for help, a feature which is way ahead of the race.

The battery life is average and lasts just above a day but that is the compensated by the Always-On mode. One can turn the feature off but that will only increase the usage by half a day more. The Apple Watch 5 does all the fitness tracking you need and with the 5 ATM water resistance rating. It can also track your swimming activities. The call quality of the watch is superb and I would recommend to buy the watch with the SIM for reaping full benefits of the watch.

Cons

Yet again, it’s a major disappointment for the Android users. The watch isn’t compatible with the Android devices. All the Apple Watches miss out on an inherent sleep tracking app but it can be downloaded from the App Store. Apple has introduced some new features but those are pretty basic features and there is no big improvement from the Apple Watch 4.
