When I first started blogging and seeing tips on how to grow my numbers, I kept seeing “write high quality posts” as the first tip. I kept thinking what in the hell does that even mean. After a few months, a ton of research, and some practical application, I’ve discovered how to write high quality posts.
I used to think that you could just write whatever you want and then hit publish. That’s all fine and dandy if blogging isn’t your actual job and it’s more of a hobby. However, if this is your only profession (like me), then you have to offer high quality posts if you expect to grow and keep an audience.

What Are High Quality Blog Posts?
When you’re writing a blog post, you aren’t just writing to hit publish. There’s a purpose and reason you do what you do. It’s not solely about making money or getting your name out there. Blogging is about helping your readers.
Posts that are considered high quality give valuable information, ask and answer questions, have a target audience in mind, and are comprehensive. They aren’t just your opinion, a stock picture, and some headings. There is a little bit more to high quality blog posts, and I’m here to share the details.
1. Have a niche or target audience in mind.
When you start writing something, ask yourself who are you writing this for. You don’t have to have a single niche, because having a successful multi-niche blog is possible. Keep in mind that you need to know who your specific audience is though.
When you know who you’re writing for and why, you can create more comprehensive posts. This is because if you know your audience, you know what they want to ask, and you can answer those questions for them. Good, high quality posts speak to the readers’ wants and needs.
2. Know what you’re talking about, and don’t fake it.
I absolutely hate the phrase “faking it until you make it.” I even have a Coffee Talks post coming up about this very topic. Many people read blogs for answers, so if you don’t know what you’re talking about, you can’t give your readers the correct answers. Sure, you could google and copy someone else, but that’s horrendous and plagiarism.
Know your shit. You don’t have to have handfuls of degrees on a topic to write about it, but having experience makes all of the difference. If you’re going to continually write about a topic, make sure you have a bigger understanding than just a general interest.
3. Create comprehensive posts that have some length to them.
I’m not the blog post police but having a lot of posts under 300 words doesn’t exactly scream high quality. Sure, quote posts are nice, and shorter posts are good for drumming up discussions if they have call-to-actions. However, a high-quality blog post should have a minimum of 300 words. For SEO and a better chance of ranking in search engines, you should aim for 1000 words or higher.
When you’re creating comprehensive posts, they should be informative but still easy to read. You don’t want to write out an entire e-book with every post, since most readers tend to scan posts first. You should be conversational with your readers all while still being informative as well.
4. Always be original.
Writing high quality posts doesn’t mean you have to follow the same steps and writing style as someone else. Don’t just do exactly as I do or as other professional bloggers to. Create your own style and grow from there.
What sets me apart from other professional bloggers is that I share when I make mistakes and am completely transparent with my readers. I swear a wee bit, and I share more than just blogging tips. I follow rules, but my voice and personality shine through. All of those differences are apart of my character. Having your personality shine through is also apart of creating high quality posts, because it will draw readers to your blog.
5. Include valuable information and answer questions.
You don’t have to answer big “whys” every time you share a new blog post. Hell, I have an entire series dedicated to what’s on my mind during my morning coffee. Hello, Coffee Talks. However, try to include valuable information in most of your posts, so you readers have a lesson or something to take away from your blog.
Not every post has to have tips or how-to’s. The majority of blog readers are reading to learn something new, feel inspired, or to grow their interests. Help your readers out by giving them something to take away when they are done reading.
6. Create high quality images that are relevant to your blog.
Originally, I used to just share memes that I thought correlated nicely with my posts. I was clueless about the wonders of apps like Canva and creating my own graphics. For high quality posts, have a high-quality graphic that’s relevant, and pair them together.
Don’t just grab the most used stock images. Get creative. Develop a style for your graphics just like you would your blog posts. Vertical images translate to Pinterest the best. Make your font clear and easy to read, and don’t forget to include the name of your blog. Also, remember to include alt text to describe the image and use keywords.
7. Make your posts readable with formatting.
Formatting can be a blogger’s BFF. The right formatting can make a post flow effortlessly and help in readability. There are few tips to remember when it comes to formatting.
- Avoid too many lengthy sentences.
- Compound sentences are okay but try to limit to 1-2 lines.
- Try to keep paragraphs between 3-4 sentences to avoid large blocks of writing.
- Use headings to break up the post and keep things organized.
- Lists or Table of contents can be beneficial.
- Use bold and italics for highlighting key points.
- Use relevant images and provide appropriate credits if required.
When you’re formatting a blog post, the things I listed are important. Also, remember to develop your own style when it comes to how you format and layout a post. I like having 3-4 paragraphs in each section of my posts with headings, but what I like may be different than you. It’s okay to be different!
8. Include a call-to-action.
A call-to-action is when you’re challenging or asking your readers to do something. You want them to take something away from your blog, and the call-to-action is apart of that. These handy actions keep the reader involved and interested even after they’ve finished reading your post.
Not every call-to-action has to be “buy this” or “subscribe before…” Sometimes, the best call-to-actions require the readers to share or comment their own experiences. Call-to-actions are a great way to create engagement and develop a connection with your readers.
I don’t always include external links, but now, almost every single post that I write has at least one internal link. Internal links offer even more to your readers. Less isn’t always more.
When you include internal links, you’re improving your SEO, and you’re helping your audience with more useful content. Having high quality posts means offering something for your readers to takeaway. Links are a great way for them to take away a little extra and learn even more.
10. Have confidence in yourself and be passionate.
This is my favorite blogging advice, because it can apply to almost anything. When you write with confidence, readers trust you and connect with what you’re saying. Confidence is attractive, and it helps with your blog’s appeal and quality.
When you lead with passion, that translates to your writing. If you love what you’re doing and writing about, your words will be more enjoyable and easier to understand. Having confidence and passion definitely aids in the quality of your post. This is because we do things better and perform better when we are enjoying ourselves.

I’d love to bow my head and offer a “the more you know” to end this, but that’s not necessarily how it works. There should always be a takeaway included of some sorts. For this, I want you to takeaway that formatting, readability, comprehensive information, and graphics are all very important- among a few other things listed as well.
The biggest takeaway should be that if you want to write high quality posts, enjoy what you’re talking about and do it with confidence. Be original and share your information in a way that is clear but is still unique to you. Readers are seeking information, but they also seek out individuals they can regularly trust and connect with.
